The Service Club and students at McKee Road Elementary in Charlotte are sending stuffed animals to all students at West Buncombe Elementary to show their love and support after Hurricane Helene. Their former music teacher is now the music teacher at West Buncombe, so they were especially excited to reach out and do something special for all the kids. The stuffed animals were brought up on Wednesday and distributed to our students at WBES. A very special thanks to the McKee Road All-Stars!!

In honor of World Kindness Day, 2nd and 3rd graders created a "quilt" of inspiring words of love and support for our neighbors in Yancey County to help welcome them back to school next week. Many thanks to the students and staff from Long Lots Elementary school in Westport, CT that sent "welcome back messages" to our students last week! They inspired us to pay the kindness forward!

On November 12, students received a surprise visit from some veterans who are currently aiding area relief efforts. The group "Save Our Allies" used our school parking lot after Hurricane Helene as a distribution spot for moving supplies to severely impacted areas by helicopter. Even though students were not in school at the time, they were able to see a video of the helicopter and hear stories from the veterans about their service to our country and how they are now helping our community. The group brought each of our students a small, patriotic gift to say 'Thank You' for using our campus. They also presented the school with a children's book, which was written by one of the founding members of the organization, about understanding the realities of veterans who were wounded returning home. This group of veterans remain in our area to help even though they no longer use our campus. The visit was a great opportunity for our students to say 'Thank You' to some of the heroes who served our country and are now helping our community.

BCS families and teammates, thank you for all of your efforts at home and in the community to recover from the devastation of the hurricane. Our hearts continue to be with you. We want to let you know Buncombe County Schools will remain closed until it is safe to open. That will require power and water restored to our buildings. We are grateful to the repair crews who are working hard to make that happen. However, there is substantial work to be done. To help families plan, we will give you adequate notice when we know a date when it is safe for Buncombe County Schools to reopen. Please continue to take care of yourself and your family. Our theme for this year is “Together We Rise” - and recovering for this storm will demonstrate that. Thank you so much!
