Hello! I am Sarah Hauke, the speech and language pathologist at West Buncombe Elementary School. I have had the pleasure of working with kindergarten through 4th grade students at West Buncombe for the past 4 years. I absolutely love what I do. I strive to help each student achieve their communication goals so that they are able to connect to others within their home and school community. My students are working on a variety of skills including receptive language, expressive language, augmentative/alternative communication, articulation, social skills, and fluency of speech. I use a wide variety of materials to target their goals, but I love to tie in literacy activities during our speech and language sessions.

We are currently beginning the journey of Virtual Learning days here at West Buncombe Elementary School! I will be working hard to support teachers, families, and students during this time by updating my site weekly with suggested speech and language activities to do at home. It is my hope that students will continue to practice their speech and language skills at home with their family during this time. Check back weekly for new materials and practice work!

Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. There is a contact tab located on the left that will allow you to contact me directly with questions or concerns.

I will be holding office hours daily during the Virtual Learning Days from 9:30am to 1:30pm. I will be available via email during this time each day. I am also available during this time for Zoom meetings with students and their families. If you child wants to have a speech check in, or you need support learning how to target their goals at home send me an email and I will schedule Zoom meeting for us to connect!
 My email address is sarah.hauke@bcsemail.org.

Virtual Learning Week 1
Choose one activity from one of the links listed in the "Helpful Links" tab to complete with your child at home!

Virtual Learning Week 2
Ask your child what he/she is working on in speech therapy, hopefully they will be able to tell you! If not, look back at their most recent IEP and locate his/her speech or language goal. If you cannot find their goals use the "contact me" tab or send me an emailing asking for a new copy. Then explore the tabs on the left side of the page and determine which area within speech and language targets their skills best. Using this information have your child choose another activity from the "helpful links" section that interests them to practice their skills! If you are unsure what activity would be best send me an email and I can select one for you!

Virtual Learning Week 3
https://www.storylineonline.net/books/arnie-the-doughnut/
Watch this story online with your child at home. Most of them will be familiar with this story as many students request it during our regular speech therapy sessions when we incorporate a video instead of a book. It's a super fun story!
Students working on Language Goals:
After watching the story together. Ask you child who the main characters were, what the problem was, how they resolved the problem, and where the story took place. Ask them what they would have done in that situation. It's also a great way to targeting sequencing by having your child tell you what happened int he beginning middle and end.
Students working on Articulation:
For children working on a specific sound grab a sticky note or piece of paper. Have them independently, or with your help, write down each word they hear in the story that starts with the sound they are working on. Following the story practice correctly pronouncing these words together. If you write a plus or a minus next to the words they said correctly/incorrectly it will give you a quick snapshot of their accuracy towards producing the sound correctly.
Students working on Social skills:
This is a great story to open up a dialog about social skills. Ask you child why Arnie was so upset, what information was Arnie missing, how would they feel if they found themselves in a situation that wasn't what they expected, and how might they solve it.

If possible send me an email at sarah.hauke@bcsemail.org or use the "contact me" tab to let me know how it went! You can even send me a video of your child practicing the words/answering questions. This way I might be able to provide more specific feedback about how to better support your child at home!
Have fun!

Virtual Learning Week 4
Hello everyone! I hope that you and your families had a relaxing spring break together last week. This week I will be working on calling or emailing each and everyone of you to check in on your child and see how you are all holding up. I want to know how I can help you support your child at home. So, don't hesitate to let me know if there is anything you need. Please note, that I do have a Michigan area code, so if you see a call coming in from an 810 area code and not an 828 it is probably me! I am looking forward to speaking with all of you. You can also email me at sarah.hauke@bcsemail.org to schedule a Zoom check-in if you're child is interested. Have a great week back to Virtual Learning!

This week I am trying something new called Boom Cards. It is an interactive way to target skills in slide show form. I haven't used these before but you should be able to click on "full preview" when you open the link and click through the slide show to have your child complete the task. If you have any issues let me know!

Virtual Learning Week 5
This week I encourage you to revisit the tabs on the left hand side of the page. Choose one activity from the section (expressive/receptive language, articulation, social skills, or assistive technology) that your child struggles with the most. I have added in several new activities over the course of the past week to these tabs along with helpful information. If possible try to respond to my contact emails/ or phone calls and let me know how your child is doing at home. All the work I post is optional, but I love hearing how your child is doing even if they aren't completing speech work. Please let me know if there is anything I can help you with!

Virtual Learning Week 6
As the Governor announced school closures for the remainder of the school year I thought it might be a good time to introduce this social story about the virus. It is a really nice child friendly social story discussing all the new things that students/children are experiencing right now in a child friendly way. Read this with your child and discuss the questions. It's a good time to check in with your child emotionally about how he/she is feeling. If you would like to opt out of this activity visit the resources tab and choose an activity from one of the helpful links I have posted.

Here is a PDF of the social story: Trinka and Sam Fight the Big Virus: Trinka, Sam, and Littletown Work Togehter

Week 7 Virtual Related Services Continue!
As we continue on with Virtual Learning/Related services I would like to do another StoryOnline story. This is one of the activities that I received the most parent feedback about and everyone seemed to enjoy completing it with their child. So this time I would like you to watch https://www.storylineonline.net/books/carlas-sandwich/
Ask you child why everyone thought that Carla's sandwiches were so gross? How do they think that made Carla feel? what finally made everyone change their mind about Carla's creative sandwiches? What kind of sandwich did she bring at the end of the story and why?

Please email me how your student did with this activity and I am happy to provide additional information on how to support your child at home! Have a great week!

Virtual Related Services Week 10
We have made it to our 10th week of virtual instruction/related services! Whew! I know that you have all been working hard at home. I want to take a moment to sincerely thank all of the families who have maintained communication with me via email, phone calls, Zoom or text. I know I have left countless voicemails and emails for all of you, and even with everything going on many of you have worked hard to continuously touch base with me. It has been a real gift to hear how all of my students are doing. I have been very thankful for the opportunity to get to know your family better during this time. I will not be assigning any new work this week as the school year is beginning to come to a close. Please take this time to email me and let me know if there is anything I can help you with as we prepare for summer break. I am happy to email additional work/support for your child over the summer. Mostly, I just want to thank you, parents and families, for all the hard work you have been doing! You are all amazing!!

Have a wonderful summer break!
