Principal Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Welcome to West Buncombe Elementary! In my opinion, it’s the best school in the world. I am so excited about this school year. I am still riding high on the successes from last year. We had tremendous EOG and MCLASS scores, PBIS Exemplar School, Odyssey of the Mind Regional Second Place, and numerous academic accolades. I am sure this year we are going to experience many wonderful achievements.

I consider it one of life’s greatest blessings to serve as the principal of this fine school. I know that the staff of WBES is unmatched. Each staff member cares about children and has a tremendous desire to help students learn.

We are the Soaring Eagles! We strive to SOAR everyday! Being Safe, Optimistic, Accountable and Respectful is the key to being a great human being. Academics are important, but if we instill a love for the components of “SOAR” we will be extremely successful.

We consider West Buncombe Elementary to be the HUB of our community. We pride ourselves in a long tradition of excellence. It is not uncommon to have three generations of West Buncombe Families where the students, parents, and grandparents attended our school. Our caring staff members live and raise their families in our community.

In the past six years our academic success has been unmatched. We rank in the top five elementary schools with composite scoring in Buncombe County. We are in the top three math elementary schools in Buncombe County. Our staff members have embraced standards-based data driven instruction and the professional learning community model. We are the home of the “Power Hour”. Our successful reading model is being implemented across the United States.

Even though we have been very successful in the past few years, we are striving to get even better. This year I am proud to announce that every student at WBES will have their own technology device. Kindergarten through second grade will use iPad minis and third through fourth grade will use Lenovo laptops. Another great addition is the purchase of a new web-based literacy program named Imagine Learning. I have been extremely interested in this program for a couple of years. It is the premiere supplemental literacy program in the world and your child will have access to it here at school and at home. I am also very excited to announce the WBES will be the “Dual Language School” for the Erwin District. This year we are introducing our first Spanish Immersion classroom in Kindergarten. We will add a classroom each year until we have one in all five grades. This will be an outstanding opportunity for our students and families. We have also added fifteen minutes to our instructional day. Our student day will now be 7:50 a.m. until 2:35 p.m.

WBES is a place where your child gets a better than private school education at a public school price. That’s free! We are constantly striving to be the best! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me or one of my fine staff members.
