Principal Newsletter

Dear Parents,

We are now approaching the end of the most unusual school year in history. In my 25 years of education and 40 plus years of life, I have never experienced anything like what we are living through today. I pray that you and your families are safe and hanging in there with this pandemic.

I want to thank you all for stepping up in your child’s education over the past three months. I am amazed that over 90 percent of our students are accessing and completing work virtually. I am not surprised that we are number one in Buncombe County with Imagine Learning and Imagine Math usage. I know it has been tough and your efforts are truly appreciated.

Your child will be able to keep his or her device over the summer. During this time, they may continue to use Imagine Learning and Imagine Math. These programs are amazing and will keep your child learning and growing throughout the summer. I recommend that students use these programs 60 minutes or more weekly. But remember it is summer and children need to have fun and relax.

Your child will be receiving a digital report card this year. You may access it through the parent portal. Students will not receive a grade for the 4th nine weeks, but your child’s teacher has placed several important comments in the “comments section” of the report card. These comments will summarize your child’s yearly progress and their progress during virtual learning.

I would like to thank my teachers for all their hard work and dedication during the past 3 months. They have tried to stay connected with all students. They have tried to continue the great instruction they usually give at school. They have tried to make learning fun. I am sure you would agree they have performed well with this new digital learning platform.

I would also like to say thank you to my teacher assistants, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, and custodians. Together they have served over 1,200 meals a day to our community. I am so proud of them.

The office staff has also been amazing. Mrs. Paine has designed and organized all the bus routes to deliver the food to different parts of our school district. Our secretaries have kept things rolling at the school with material pick-ups, enrolling students, answering questions, getting reimbursements, and fielding many phone calls a day. They are now preparing for next school year. A special thanks to Mrs. Hutson who single handedly fixed and distributed all devices that had trouble. She has been amazing!

Any requests for next year must be in writing and turned in by July 1st. Please give two choices because teachers are limited to 5 requests. This will be on a first come first serve basis. We will try our best to accommodate all requests, but please understand the complexity of generating equal and fair class lists limits us in fulfilling numerous requests.

In closing, I hope you have been satisfied with West Buncombe this year. We all can’t wait until August 17th when our students can return to school and get back to the business of being the best school in the world.

                                                                                                            Sincerely,

                                                                                                            Brian Chandler
