West Buncombe Elementary School’s cafeteria erupted into cheers on Wednesday as students learned that their principal, Brian Chandler, has been named Buncombe County Schools Principal of the Year.

BCS Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin, Associate Superintendent Susanne Swanger, and other administrators quietly gathered in the media center with balloons, flowers, and a celebratory cake. Then they walked to the cafeteria to surprise Chandler.

“That was unexpected!” He said after giving high-fives to the excited students.

Chandler, who has been a BCS educator for 24 years, said he is inspired by his wonderful school, along with parent and community support.

“We call our school Best Buncombe, not West Buncombe,” he said. “I am so humbled and honored to have this privilege to be Principal of the Year for Buncombe County Schools, the best school system in North Carolina. It’s definitely the highest honor I’ve ever had.”

Chandler was elected by his fellow BCS principals for this honor. The results of the election were kept a secret until today. Chandler is now in the running for Region VIII Principal of the Year. Region VIII includes counties and municipal school systems in the southwestern part of North Carolina. The district winner will then face off against the other seven districts for North Carolina Principal of the Year.

“We’re going to try our best to make Buncombe County proud,” he said.
