Class Handbook

Welcome to Second Grade!

Dear Parents,

I want to welcome you and your child to room 204!  I look forward to working with you both.

My name is Shelly Knupp.  I am married to Shane and we have two children and 3 granddaughters, Saige, Evie and Ivy.  My daughter, Kristian, is 28 yrs. old and lives in Greenville, SC and my son, Noah, is 22 and lives in Hendersonville.  I enjoy watching and playing sports.  Go Duke and Clemson!  I also love to read in any of my spare time.  I am a graduate of our very own West Buncombe, Erwin, and Western Carolina.  I also received my master's degree in education from Montreat College.  This is my 27th year of teaching here at WBES.  I’ve spent time teaching kindergarten, second and third grades.

Daily Activities

Your child will be attending enrichment classes throughout the week (PE, art, S.T.E.M. lab, music, Tech Lab and media).   We will have a snack daily.  Please make sure your child has a snack and water bottle each day.  (I always welcome extra snacks—just in case someone forgets!)  We love to celebrate birthdays so feel free to send in a special snack for your child’s day.

Our daily lunch time is 11:15.

** Daily cost—there will be no cost again this year for lunch due to a federal grant.

ONE TO ONE DEVICES

Every child in our school will be assigned a device.  K-2 students will have Ipads and 3rd and 4th graders will be assigned Lenovo ThinkPads.  We will work with these daily in class and will begin introducing technology into our learning and daily activities.

I would like to reiterate what is stated in the WBES handbook concerning cell phones and watches that may be linked to phones or other devices.  These will not be permitted in class during the school day.  Thank you for your cooperation and help with this matter.

Discipline

We have one rule: “Treat others as you want to be treated.”  This should cover everything from listening and following directions to being respectful to others.  Your child will receive a daily discipline report included in the weekly note which stays in the folder for the week.  Please sign and return this daily.  I feel it is very important for us to remain in contact concerning your child’s behavior.  Your child will (more than likely) get in trouble occasionally.  Please remember he/she is a child and we want him/her to act like one.  Therefore, do NOT expect or set the expectation of a “perfect record” with your child.  However, if your child is getting in trouble daily, we may need to talk!  You will be notified if rules are severely and/or frequently broken.

We are going to work on a positive reinforcement basis. Behavior which may be “out of hand” will be dealt with accordingly.  Wise choices may lead to happy hearts, choice time, homework passes, treats, sit with a friend for a day, and much more!

For the first time ever, our class will be earning bracelets and charms (“crock shoe charms”). Each child will begin the year with a bracelet and then earn hole punches to gain charms. I am super excited and can’t wait to share with the children.

Homework Folders

Each Monday 2 sheets will be sent home. Each sheet should remain in the folder for the week.

1) The first sheet (1/2 sheet of paper) will be dates, important information and discipline log. Please sign each evening.

2) The second sheet will be divided into 4 parts. Your child is responsible for completing ONE section each evening. If he/she chooses to complete more than one section, that is fine. The sheet should just be completed by Friday morning.

Homework should be minimal and take no more than 15 minutes each evening.

If your child does not finish his/her math assignment or has numerous corrections, it may need to be completed for homework.

I want your child to continue to love learning.  We will strive to have a community of fairness, respect, and personal relationships.  I am looking forward to letting the children have ownership in this classroom.  They will achieve this by helping me make decisions on a daily basis.  I am here not only for the children, but you as well.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  My email address is:  shelly.knupp@bcsemail.org.  You may also call the school and leave a voice mail for me at 232-4282.  I will return your call as soon as possible.

***The quickest way to reach me is through the Remind App. If you need information on how to sign up, please see me immediately.

The information is included.  This is an excellent way to ensure that we stay in contact!!  This is my MAIN communication tool with parents. I often send messages, pictures or information through Remind.  Thanks!

Do not hesitate to ask anything that still may be unclear. ๐Ÿ˜Š

I look forward to partnering with you,

 Shelly Knupp
