Class Handbook

Welcome to Third Grade!

Dear Parents,

I want to welcome you and your child to room 305!  I look forward to working with you both.

My name is Shelly Knupp.  I am married to Shane and we have two children, Kristian and Noah and two granddaughters, Saige and Evie.  I enjoy watching and playing sports.  Go Duke!  (The rest of my family are huge Clemson fans!)  I also love to read in any of my spare time.  I am a graduate of West Buncombe, Erwin, and Western Carolina.  I also received my master's degree in education from Montreat College.  This is my 25th year of teaching here at WBES.

Daily Activities

Your child will be attending enrichment classes throughout the week (PE, art, computer lab, music, and media).   We will have a snack daily.  Please make sure your child has a snack and snack drink each day.  (I always welcome extra snacks—just in case someone forgets!)  We love to celebrate birthdays so feel free to send in special snacks for your child’s day.  Your child will need either a lunch box or money for lunch daily.   You may send in pre-pay for your child’s lunch and we will make sure this gets to the cafeteria.

Our daily lunch time is 11:25.

**Lunch prices have increased by $0.10.  Daily cost-- $2.35.

We have one rule:  “Treat others as you want to be treated.”  This should cover everything from listening and following directions to being respectful to others.  Your child will receive a daily discipline report included on the homework log.  Please sign and return this daily.  I feel it is very important for us to remain in contact concerning your child’s behavior.  Your child will (more than likely) get in trouble occasionally.  Please remember he/she is a child and we want him/her to act like one.  Therefore, do NOT expect or set the expectation of a “perfect record” with your child.  However, if your child is getting in trouble daily, we may need to talk!  You will be notified if rules are severely and/or frequently broken.

We are going to work on a positive reinforcement basis. Behavior which may be “out of hand” will be dealt with accordingly.  Wise choices may lead to happy hearts, choice time, homework passes, treats, sit with a friend for a day, and lots more!

Homework Folders

Reading logs will be sent home on Monday and should be returned to school daily.  Your child should read orally at least 20 minutes each evening to an adult.  It is very important for you to listen as your child reads and ask questions as he/she is reading to ensure understanding.

If your child does not finish his/her math assignment or has numerous corrections, it will be completed for homework.  We may occasionally give math homework, but more often than not your child will only be responsible for reading.

I want your child to continue to love learning.  We will strive to have a community of fairness, respect, and personal relationships.  I am looking forward to letting the children have ownership in this classroom.  They will achieve this by helping me make decisions on a daily basis.  I am here not only for the children, but you as well.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  My email address is:  You may also call the school and leave a voice mail for me at 232-4282.  I will return your call as soon as possible.

This year you will only be able to volunteer IF you have completed the online volunteer information that is included in this packet.  Please be aware this includes eating lunch, parties or fieldtrips.

PLEASE, if at all possible, sign up to receive information from me via the Remind App.  The information is included.  This is an excellent way to ensure that we stay in contact!!  I often send reminders or information through Remind.
