Hello!  My name is Maggie Wheeless.   I have lived in many places but I consider Mableton, Georgia my home.  I left there in 1993 to attend Western Carolina University.  I did  both my undergraduate and graduate work at WCU.

After college I served in the AmeriCorps NCCC program.  I was stationed in Charleston, SC but traveled all over the southeast.   I was lucky enough to be on the wildland firefighting and disaster relief teams although we didn't get to  use our firefighting training much.  My team spent a lot of our time doing manual labor for the park service and in the public schools.  It was during that time that I decided that I wanted to work in schools when I "grew up".

I started working for two federal TRIO programs at WCU in 2000.  I was the Assistant Director of the Upward Bound Math and Science program and an Outreach Counselor for the Educational Talent Search program.  Both of those programs work to get middle and high school students who are low-income and potential first generation college students, like myself, to go to college.

I started my career as a School Counselor in 2007 at AC Reynolds High School in Buncombe County.  I later worked at Edneyville Elementary in Henderson County, Isaac Dickson Elementary in Asheville City, and now I am happy to be back in Buncombe County.

Some of my favorite things to do when I'm not at work include camping, swimming, mountain biking, reading, and spending time with my dogs.  My husband and I love taking adventures in our canoe and skiing when we get the chance.
